Target species
The Gulf's species mix differs from the Andaman:
Common Gulf targets:
- Spanish mackerel (especially Chumphon area)
- Queenfish
- Trevally (smaller species; the Gulf doesn't typically produce trophy-class GT)
- Snapper, groupers (reef structure)
- Cobia (occasional)
- Barracuda
- Squid (seasonal; specialist night fishing)

Possible but uncommon Gulf targets:
- Sailfish (a few per year, especially southern Gulf shoulder months)

For a visiting angler whose main goal is sailfish, marlin, or trophy GT, the Andaman is the right answer. For an angler whose goal is "fishing in Thailand" without a specific trophy target, the Gulf has plenty to offer.

- Coming from Bangkok, want shortest road trip: Hua Hin or Pattaya. Both 2-3 hours from central Bangkok.
- Want a quieter alternative to the busy resort coasts: Rayong or Chumphon.
- Combining with a beach resort stay on a Gulf island: Koh Samui or Koh Tao.
- Targeting Spanish mackerel specifically: Chumphon, in season (March-September).
- Family with kids, half-day inshore: Hua Hin or Koh Samui.
- Night fishing for squid: Koh Samui or Chumphon.
