Chumphon — An Honest Fishing Town

Chumphon is not a tourist destination. It is a functional Thai provincial capital on the narrowing isthmus where the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman coast are at their closest — about 50 kilometres apart at Chumphon's latitude — and it operates with the self-sufficient energy of a town that does not particularly need or seek outside attention. The fishing industry here is commercial rather than recreational; the charter boat sector is minimal by the standards of Phuket, Pattaya, or Koh Samui.

What Chumphon has is a genuinely productive inner Gulf reef system within reasonable boat range of the Pak Nam Chumphon pier, and a Spanish mackerel population that, in peak season, puts most of Thailand's more famous fishing destinations to shame for sheer volume of strikes. This is the destination for the angler who values catch quality and low cost over convenience and English-language infrastructure.

Chumphon's geography advantage

Chumphon sits at the meeting point of two distinct oceanographic systems. The inner Gulf is sheltered by the peninsula; the outer Gulf influences bring nutrient-rich water from the deeper Gulf. This confluence creates excellent conditions for pelagic species like Spanish mackerel and longtail tuna, particularly when the northeast monsoon drives bait schools southward along the western Gulf coast in November through January.

The Day-Charter Scene

The fishing boat fleet operates from Pak Nam Chumphon, approximately 15 kilometres from the town centre on the coast road. This is a working pier — commercial boats, ferry services to Koh Tao and Koh Phangan, and a modest number of fishing vessels available for hire. The arrangement is entirely informal.

The approach: Show up at the pier from 5–6 am, which is when the boat captains are preparing. Ask for a fishing charter ("ao joeng reua pai tok pla khrap" — ขอจ้างเรือไปตกปลาครับ). Expect to negotiate in basic Thai. Budget THB 2,500–4,000 for a half-day (4–5 hours) on a longtail or open boat.

Where they go: The primary fishing grounds from Pak Nam Chumphon are the inner Gulf reefs and rocky outcrops at 10–25 nautical miles northeast and east of the pier. Mu Koh Chumphon National Marine Park — a cluster of islands and reef systems approximately 25 km from the mainland — is the centrepiece of the fishing area. The park's reef edges and current-exposed rock structures hold Spanish mackerel, longtail tuna, and substantial grouper populations.

Spanish Mackerel — The Priority Species

Scomberomorus commerson — pla insi in Thai — is the Gulf coast's signature pelagic sport fish, and Chumphon's inner reefs are among the most productive Spanish mackerel grounds on the western Gulf shore. These fish run 4–25 kg, school actively when feeding, and respond to trolled lures, high-speed cast lures, and live bait with equal aggression.

Peak season runs October through February, when the northeast monsoon drives bait schools into the inner Gulf and the mackerel follow. On productive days, multiple boat hook-ups per hour are not unusual — the schooling behaviour means locating one fish often means locating many. Local skippers track the mackerel schools using bird activity as an indicator; a gathering of terns over a current edge is a reliable sign of feeding fish below.

The tackle appropriate for Chumphon mackerel: a 20–30 lb spinning outfit with a fast retrieve reel and a short wire or heavy fluorocarbon trace (mackerel teeth cut through standard mono and braid leaders). A selection of metal casting lures in the 20–40g range and some feather lures for trolling covers the session.

Longtail Tuna — The High-Volume Fishery

Longtail tuna (Thunnus tonggol) school on the Chumphon Gulf reefs in large numbers from approximately October through March. They are smaller than yellowfin (typically 2–7 kg) but compensate with sheer aggression and availability. Longtail feed at the surface in classic pelagic-burst style — crashing bait schools in a pattern that is visible from distance and allows intercept casting.

A small metal spoon or feather cast into an active surface school typically produces an immediate hook-up. On productive grounds, it is possible to land twenty to thirty longtail tuna in a morning session — quantity fishing rather than trophy fishing, but highly entertaining on appropriate light tackle.

The Koh Tao Liveaboard Dimension

Koh Tao — the diving island approximately 80 km northeast of Chumphon across the Gulf — has a small but active fishing community and several operators running overnight and multi-day fishing trips from the island's west coast piers. These operations are accessible via the Chumphon–Koh Tao ferry connection.

For overnight or multi-day fishing targeting deeper Gulf species including large grouper and offshore yellowfin tuna, the Koh Tao departure point gives access to Gulf grounds not reachable on a Chumphon day-charter. Several Koh Tao dive shops have expanded into fishing charters; the island's dive infrastructure (reliable vessels, experienced crew) translates reasonably well to fishing charter operation.

Weather Windows — Understanding Gulf Seasonality

The Gulf of Thailand is not as dramatically affected by the southwest monsoon as the Andaman coast, but Chumphon's Gulf waters are not immune to monsoon-season disruption. The practical fishing calendar from Pak Nam Chumphon:

  • October–February: Optimal. Northeast monsoon brings calm Gulf conditions and the Spanish mackerel/longtail tuna peak. This is when Chumphon's Gulf fishing is at its best.
  • March–May: Good. Reef species fishing is excellent. Pelagic activity begins to move as the season transitions.
  • June–August: Variable. The inner Gulf sees increased afternoon squalls. Day-charter fishing continues on calmer days but offshore runs become weather-dependent. Some operators suspend operations.
  • September: Improving. A transitional month with variable conditions; experienced skippers often find good fishing as the northeast monsoon builds toward October.

The key difference from the Andaman: the Gulf's sheltered position means the monsoon season is more manageable for inshore and near-reef fishing. A Phuket operator may be grounded entirely in July; a Chumphon skipper with good local knowledge may still be finding productive fishing on the inner reefs on selected calmer days.

Accommodation and logistics

Chumphon town has adequate mid-range hotels at Thai domestic prices. For pier access, staying on the coast road near Pak Nam Chumphon (Hat Thung Wua Laen or Hat Sai Ri beaches) is more convenient than the town centre and keeps the morning commute to the pier minimal. Several beachside guesthouses have informal connections to fishing boat operators and can arrange introductions.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is Chumphon worth visiting specifically for charter fishing?

For Spanish mackerel in particular, Chumphon's inner Gulf reefs are productive and underrated. The town is not a developed fishing tourism destination — there is no established English-language charter booking scene — but the fishing quality, particularly in the October–February Spanish mackerel peak, is genuinely excellent for anglers willing to work through the language barrier.

What is the best time of year to fish out of Chumphon?

October through February for Spanish mackerel and longtail tuna on the Gulf reefs. March through May is also productive for reef species including grouper and snapper. June through September is the Gulf monsoon period — inshore fishing continues but is more weather-dependent and the pelagic species move off the near-coast grounds.

Is Chumphon a good starting point for Koh Tao?

Yes. Chumphon is the mainland jump-off for Koh Tao — speedboat and ferry services run regularly from Pak Nam Chumphon pier. Several Koh Tao-based liveaboard operations that depart for overnight fishing or diving trips use the Chumphon connection for mainland access.

How do I book a charter in Chumphon?

Direct pier negotiation at Pak Nam Chumphon is the primary method. A Thai-speaking travel companion or a hotel concierge at one of the Chumphon town hotels simplifies the booking process significantly. Some Chumphon fishing guest houses — notably Hat Sai Ri and Tung Wua Laen beach area accommodation — have informal connections with fishing boat operators.
