Koh Samui's Night Fishing Scene — An Introduction

Koh Samui is Thailand's second-largest island and one of its most visited resort destinations. The fishing charter scene here is proportionally smaller and less organised than on the mainland Gulf coast — tourism is dominated by beaches, yoga retreats, and luxury resorts rather than sport fishing — but the fishing itself is excellent. The island sits at the northern entrance to the Gulf of Thailand's lower section, with access to the Koh Phangan reef chain to the north and the deeper reefs around Koh Tao 80 km further north. Night fishing from Koh Samui accesses all of these zones with the added dimension of nocturnal squid and large GT that come inshore after dark.

The eastern Gulf coast follows a different seasonal pattern from the Andaman. This is the key fact that trips up visitors who apply Phuket seasonality assumptions to Koh Samui: the northeast monsoon brings heavy rain and rough conditions to Koh Samui's east coast from October through December, while the Andaman is calm. The best Koh Samui months are January through June; the worst are October and November.

The Gulf east-coast monsoon reversal

When Phuket charter operators are running daily, Koh Samui may be in monsoon rain. When Phuket is grounded in May by the southwest monsoon, Koh Samui's Gulf east coast may be settling into its calmest period of the year. This reversal affects planning for anyone considering both destinations in the same trip.

The Night Squid Fishery Around Koh Phangan

Koh Phangan's reef system — the reefs of the Ang Thong Marine National Park to the west and the outer reefs on the island's eastern approaches — provides excellent squid fishing under LED lights from approximately November through April on the calmer nights.

The technique is identical to the Pattaya approach: LED panels deployed over the side, vertical jigging with size 3.0–3.5 squid jigs, fishing the light cone boundary where squid approach from the dark water beyond the light radius. Koh Samui night-charter operators running squid trips make the 30–45-minute transit to Koh Phangan's western reefs, anchor in 20–35 metres, and fish from 8 pm through midnight.

Squid production on Koh Phangan reefs: Generally good but more variable than the Pattaya inner Gulf — the Pattaya grounds are fished more consistently and skippers have deeper knowledge of specific productive anchoring points. On a good night near Koh Phangan, two anglers can fill a 10-litre bucket between 8 pm and midnight.

Night GT at Koh Tao Reefs

Giant trevally (Caranx ignobilis) are present around the Koh Tao reef system and associated pinnacles — particularly Chumphon Pinnacle (approximately 15 km north of Koh Tao at 36 metres depth) and Hin Wong Pinnacle — in sizes that are not easily found on the inner Gulf. Fish exceeding 20 kg are caught from these reefs regularly during the day. At night, the GT feeding behaviour changes: they move higher in the water column, become more responsive to surface and subsurface presentations, and the light attraction from squid boats draws them into areas where they can be intercepted on casting gear.

The Koh Tao reef run from Koh Samui requires careful planning:

  • Depart Koh Samui approximately 3–4 pm (transit time: 3–4 hours to Koh Tao in a standard charter vessel)
  • Arrive at the reefs at dusk for the last hour of day-fishing, then transition to night methods
  • Fish through the night (targeting squid near Koh Tao, GT and mackerel on the reef edges)
  • Return transit begins at 2–3 am for a dawn arrival at Koh Samui

This is a demanding overnight trip — 14–16 hours total — and is not appropriate for anglers prone to seasickness. The transit in both directions can encounter short-period swell from Gulf weather systems. Confirm sea state forecast before committing.

Spanish Mackerel at Night

Spanish mackerel are not exclusively diurnal. In areas with significant bait concentration — the light-attracted bait schools around a squid boat — mackerel actively hunt at night. Koh Samui night-charter operators who fish the Koh Phangan approaches frequently encounter Spanish mackerel working the bait cloud attracted by the squid lights, particularly in the October–February season.

The night mackerel encounter is different from a day-charter trolling intercept: it happens at close range, in the light halo, on fish that are already in feeding mode. A cast metal lure into the edge of the light — a 20–30g slow-sink or a surface pencil — across the path of mackerel following the bait produces explosive strikes in the boat-light conditions. This is some of the most visually exciting fishing available on a Koh Samui night charter.

Departure Protocols and Logistics

Departure piers: Big Buddha Pier in the northeast (Bophut area) is the most accessible for North Samui accommodation. Nathon Pier on the west coast is the main ferry pier but also hosts fishing charters. Maenam beach on the north coast has informal longtail and open-boat departures.

Departure time: Most Koh Samui night charters for squid in the Koh Phangan area depart between 5:30 and 7 pm. The Koh Tao overnight run requires a 3–4 pm departure to make the transit in reasonable daylight.

Duration options:

  • Short squid night: 6 pm–11 pm (5 hours, closest grounds)
  • Standard night charter: 6 pm–1 am (7 hours, Koh Phangan squid and mackerel)
  • Koh Tao overnight: 3 pm–7 am (16 hours, premium experience, significant cost)

Cost ranges:

  • Short squid night charter (1–4 anglers, close grounds): THB 4,000–6,000
  • Standard night charter: THB 5,000–8,000
  • Koh Tao overnight: THB 12,000–20,000 depending on vessel and crew

What a Night on the Gulf Actually Delivers

The Koh Samui night fishing experience differs from the Pattaya version in one meaningful way: the setting. Koh Samui's night-time Gulf view — Koh Phangan's lights on the northern horizon, the stars above the Gulf horizon, the LED-lit water below the boat with its green-blue clarity revealing the fish activity around the light cone — is one of the more beautiful fishing environments in Southeast Asia.

Fishing quality: excellent for squid on most nights when conditions allow. Good for Spanish mackerel when the bait is active. Variable for GT — when they show, the encounters are dramatic; when they do not, the night is still productive on squid alone.

The practical kit for a Koh Samui night

Bring a light jacket — the Gulf at night is breezy and the apparent temperature drops significantly below the daytime ambient. A waterproof phone case. Insect repellent — the light rings attract mosquitoes as readily as squid. Sea-sickness medication if your tolerance is uncertain — take it 60–90 minutes before departure, not on the boat. Snacks and water for a 6+ hour session; most operators do not provide food.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is the Koh Samui night fishing scene as developed as Pattaya's?

No — Pattaya has a more established night-fishing charter infrastructure. Koh Samui's night fishing market is smaller and more oriented toward informal arrangements. But the fishing quality is excellent, particularly the run north to Koh Tao reefs for night GT and mackerel, and the squid around Koh Phangan's reef edges.

What is the Koh Tao reef run?

A category of night-charter trip where the boat departs Koh Samui in the afternoon, runs 80 km north to the reefs surrounding Koh Tao and Chumphon Pinnacle, fishes through the night, and returns by dawn. These trips require 6–8 hours of transit time but access some of the most productive reef fishing in the Gulf of Thailand — GT to 25 kg, large Spanish mackerel, and deep-water grouper are all realistic targets.

When is the best season for Koh Samui night fishing?

The Gulf's eastern side follows a different monsoon pattern from the Andaman. Koh Samui's best weather window is January through June. The northeast monsoon brings heavy rain to the east coast of the Gulf (including Koh Samui) from October through December — the opposite of the Andaman pattern. July through September is the quietest and most settled period. Check monthly rain and swell data rather than assuming standard Thai season rules apply.

How do I find a night fishing operator on Koh Samui?

The Big Buddha Pier area in the northeast of the island and the Maenam waterfront on the north coast are the primary fishing charter departure points. Hotel activities desks at mid-range and upscale resorts can arrange night fishing. Several fishing-specific operators maintain WhatsApp contact and can be found through the 'Koh Samui Fishing' Facebook group.
