Fishing Thailand in February: Sailfish Peak, Andaman High Season, and the Rush to Book

February is sailfish season at its most productive. Andaman charters are fully booked, liveaboards are packed, and Bangkok stays pleasantly cool for pay-lake fishing.

February in Thailand is what January promised. The sailfish are in full sprint. The Andaman Sea remains silky and cooperative. Bangkok holds its cool-dry composure for another month before the heat begins its slow advance. If January is the best month on the calendar, February is its near-equal — and in some respects, specifically for billfish, it edges ahead.

The Weather and Water This Month

Conditions across Thailand in February track closely to January's. The cool, dry northeast monsoon continues to govern the north and central regions. Bangkok sees highs of 29–33°C — slightly warmer than January but still manageable, especially in the mornings and evenings. Rainfall is negligible. Humidity is low by Thai standards.

The Andaman coast — Phuket, Krabi, Khao Lak — remains in excellent shape. Seas are calm, visibility is high, and the northeast trade wind keeps surface conditions clean. There is a slight warming trend underway, but nothing that disrupts fishing. Expect water temperatures in the 28–30°C range offshore.

One northern footnote: a late cold snap is possible in Chiang Mai and the highland provinces during the first two weeks of February. These brief pulses of cooler air — originating from high-pressure systems over China — push temperatures into the mid-teens overnight and occasionally into the low twenties during the day. For reservoir and river fishing, this is not a problem. For touring anglers staying in the north, it simply means packing one extra layer.

Book before you land

February is peak demand for Andaman liveaboards and sailfish charters. Reputable operators running the Burma Banks and Similan Islands routes are frequently fully committed four to six weeks in advance. Don't leave booking to the week you arrive.

Freshwater Fishing This Month

Bangkok Pay-Lakes

The Bangkok pay-lake circuit remains at its seasonal best through February. Cool-to-warm mornings, low humidity, and fish that are feeding confidently make this the second-most-comfortable month of the year for urban angling.

Bungsamran Lake continues to produce well across its roster of exotic and native species. Giant Mekong catfish and arapaima are the draws for overseas visitors; giant Siamese carp and chao phraya catfish keep sessions interesting between the marquee bites. Boilies, dough balls, and pellet-based bottom rigs remain the standard presentation.

IT Lake Monsters is worth a session for those seeking trophy arapaima or pacu tambaqui. Its stocked population of large fish remains active in February water temperatures. Palm Tree Lagoon and Exotic Fishing Thailand are solid alternatives if you want a slightly different species mix or a quieter atmosphere.

Weekend pegs at premium venues fill quickly during peak tourist season. If your schedule allows it, fish Monday through Thursday — you'll have better peg selection and fewer distractions.

Northern Reservoirs

This is the final guaranteed-reliable window for northern reservoir fishing before the slow warming of March begins to complicate conditions. The cool snap mentioned above, if it arrives, can actually improve freshwater fishing in highland areas — concentrating fish and triggering feeding sprees.

Mahseer fishing remains the standout opportunity. Gillhams Fishing Resort in Krabi — which manages a strong population of Siamese mahseer — offers an interesting hybrid option for anglers already positioned on the Andaman coast for saltwater. You can split a week between offshore charter fishing and freshwater sessions without changing your base hotel.

For those committed to the north, wild river fishing in the Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai provinces for giant snakehead and native barb species can be exceptional on February mornings when the water is clear and cold.

In some ways February edges January — when the sailfish are in full sprint and the Andaman Sea is at its most generous.

Saltwater Fishing This Month

Andaman Sea

The Andaman in February is, by most accounts, the single best month for billfish in Thai waters. Sailfish numbers peak on offshore grounds north of Phuket — the Burma Banks and outer seamounts attract bait schools, and the bait attracts sailfish. Multiple-fish days are not uncommon on well-run live-bait trips.

Sailfish season Thailand documentation consistently points to January–February as the core window. Charter operators out of Khao Lak are fully committed; boats depart early, fish hard, and return late. The day trips can be long — 10 to 12 hours — but the potential justifies the effort. Marlin fishing Thailand also picks up in February as blue and black marlin move through similar offshore zones.

GT popping at the Similan Islands and surrounding reef systems remains excellent. Giant trevally are resident around the outer atolls, and the clear February water lets you sight-fish to fish working the flats and shallow reef edges. This is technical, visual fishing at its most satisfying.

Liveaboards departing from Phuket and Khao Lak are the preferred delivery method for both experiences. A five-night trip — combining Burma Banks trolling for billfish with Similan GT popping and deep jigging — is the gold standard February itinerary. These trips are expensive, fully crewed, and typically sold out. Plan accordingly.

Koh Rok south of Krabi is a quieter, slightly more accessible alternative for sailfish. Day trips from Krabi are feasible, and the grounds produce reliably through February.

Gulf of Thailand

The Gulf continues its steady recovery from December's northeast-monsoon weather. By mid-February, conditions at Koh Samui and the surrounding waters are predictable and increasingly pleasant. Barramundi, snapper, and grouper are the workhorses. The Gulf of Thailand fishing guide covers species distribution and technique in detail.

Koh Tao and Koh Phangan offer reef-based sessions that can be productive for smaller pelagics and bottom species. These are not headline-grabbing billfish sessions, but they're relaxed, affordable, and often excellent value when the Andaman is oversubscribed.

1. Burma Banks Sailfish Liveaboard — The flagship February experience. Board a liveaboard from Khao Lak targeting offshore sailfish and marlin, with GT popping at the Similans included. Five nights, fully guided.

2. Phuket GT Day Charter — If a liveaboard isn't practical, charter a day boat from Chalong Bay targeting Racha Yai and Racha Noi for GT and mixed reef species. Accessible, focused, and productive in February's calm seas.

3. Bangkok Pay-Lake Long WeekendBungsamran Lake anchors a Bangkok-based trip with two or three sessions across different venues. February mornings in Bangkok are genuinely enjoyable for fishing.

4. Krabi Combo — Freshwater and Salt — Base in Krabi, fish Gillhams for mahseer in the mornings and join a day charter targeting sailfish at Koh Rok in the afternoons. An efficient use of time for anglers who want to cover both disciplines.

What to Avoid This Month

Attempting to book popular offshore operators without advance notice is the primary mistake of February fishing trips. Andaman liveaboards and top-end saltwater charters are under maximum demand. Turning up in Khao Lak or Phuket and expecting to join a trip within 24 hours is wishful thinking in peak season.

Avoid overestimating northern conditions late in the month. By the final week of February, highland reservoirs are beginning their slow warming cycle. The best sessions are in the first three weeks.

Comfort and Gear Notes

February remains comfortable across most of Thailand. Sun protection clothing is essential on the water — Andaman UV levels are high even in the cooler months — but heat management is not yet the priority it will become from April onward.

Offshore anglers should carry a light jacket or long fleece for early morning departures. Pre-dawn starts on an open boat in February can be surprisingly cool. Bring a buff or balaclava if you run sensitive to wind chill.

For billfish trips, your GT popping tackle guide and general offshore gear should be weight-rated for fish of consequence. Sailfish average 25–45 kg in Thai waters; GT commonly reach 30 kg and above. Mismatched tackle is not forgiven.

Where to Go Next

February transitions into March, which holds much of the same saltwater potential but begins introducing Gulf improvements and hints of incoming heat. See our March fishing guide for what shifts and what opportunities emerge.
