Most anglers who come to Krabi have a single destination in mind before they land. Gillhams Fishing Resort sits in a valley inland from Ao Nang, surrounded by the limestone karst towers that make this part of southern Thailand one of the most visually arresting landscapes in the world. The resort has earned a global reputation over more than a decade of operation — it is, by most assessments, the finest freshwater exotic fishing resort in Asia, and one of the most remarkable anywhere. Coming to Krabi for any other fishing reason requires a deliberate effort. But for those who make the trip with Gillhams as the centrepiece, the surrounding province provides enough scenic beauty, beach atmosphere, and saltwater fishing to make a complete and deeply satisfying trip.
What Defines Krabi Fishing
Krabi province is a predominantly fishing community turned tourist destination. Its coastline is spectacular — vertical limestone pillars rise from the Andaman Sea, framing beaches that have appeared in countless travel photographs. Inland, the province rises into forested hills where reservoirs and rivers hold wild fish in modest but genuine numbers. But the defining fishing experience here is not wild. It is the controlled, managed, extraordinary environment of Gillhams, where fish that would take years to encounter in the wild can be targeted with precision tackle and expert guidance.
This is not a criticism. Gillhams is what it is by design, and what it is happens to be genuinely exceptional. The lake holds arapaima, Giant Siamese carp, giant snakehead, barramundi, and a roster of other species that reads like a wishlist assembled from across the tropical world. The setting — green hills, karst spires, comfortable lodges — makes the experience something more than just fishing.

The Realistic Species Mix
At Gillhams and its sister venue DreamLake, the species list is extraordinary in its breadth. Arapaima are the headline draw — the lake holds some very large specimens, and catching a fish in the 50–100 kg range is a realistic prospect, not a fantasy. Giant Siamese carp are present in excellent numbers and size. Giant snakehead provide a completely different style of fishing — surface lure work in the margins, explosive strikes, and a fish that fights with a savage intelligence. Barramundi, pacu, Amazon redtail catfish, and Chao Phraya catfish round out the species mix across the two venues.
For saltwater fishing out of Ao Nang, the offshore grounds hold sailfish, wahoo, barracuda, and various reef species. Day trips from Ao Nang pier are available, though the charter infrastructure here is smaller than Phuket's. Giant trevally can be targeted on the outer reefs.
In Krabi's wilder waterways — the rivers and reservoirs inland — smaller native species are possible: various snakehead, snapper, and freshwater barb species. This requires local knowledge and is best approached through a guide service rather than solo exploration.
The Major Venues
Gillhams Fishing Resort
Gillhams is the reason to come to Krabi. Located in the hills above Ao Nang, the resort has invested seriously in both its fishery and its facilities over the years. Pegs are distributed around a well-maintained lake that is large enough to feel like a genuine fishery. The lodge accommodation is comfortable, the staff speak English, and the resident guides have a thorough understanding of the lake and its inhabitants.
Day sessions are available for those staying elsewhere in Ao Nang, but staying on site is the better experience. Fishing is typically from fixed pegs on the bank, with float, ledger, and lure approaches all viable depending on target species. The resort provides tackle if needed, though serious anglers will want to bring their own rigs for specific techniques.
Rates are at the premium end compared to Bangkok pay-lakes, reflecting the quality of the fishery and the accommodation package. Booking in advance is strongly advisable — it is not unusual for Gillhams to be full weeks or months ahead during peak season.
DreamLake Fishing Resort
DreamLake operates as a complementary venue to Gillhams — different in character but sharing the same commitment to quality. The lake is smaller, the atmosphere more intimate, and the species mix slightly different, with particularly good snakehead fishing available. Many visiting anglers split their time across both venues for the change of pace. DreamLake is also somewhat more accessible price-wise, making it a good option for a day session.
Ao Nang Saltwater Charters
The beachfront at Ao Nang is the departure point for day-trip saltwater fishing. The charter fleet here is modest compared to Phuket, but functional. Half-day and full-day trips are available targeting reef species, with longer runs possible for those wanting to target the pelagic grounds. The adjacent limestone islands — Koh Phi Phi is nearby — create interesting current structures that hold bait and attract larger fish.
For serious offshore fishing, Phuket remains the better base. But if you're spending a week in Krabi and want to break up the freshwater sessions with a saltwater day, the option is there.

When to Come
Krabi shares the Andaman coast's weather patterns with Phuket. The dry season from November through April brings calmer weather, lower humidity, and the most reliable conditions for both freshwater and saltwater fishing. The monsoon season — May through October — brings heavy rain, rough offshore seas, and occasional flooding. Gillhams continues to operate through the wet season, as the freshwater lake is not weather-dependent in the same way as offshore fishing, but access roads can be affected by heavy rain.
January through March is the sweet spot: excellent freshwater fishing at Gillhams, calm enough for offshore day trips, and the karst scenery at its most photogenic under clear skies. The April shoulder season is productive and slightly less crowded than the peak months.
Recommended Trip Lengths
Minimum: Three days. This is enough for two serious fishing days at Gillhams or DreamLake, but leaves little room for exploring Ao Nang or saltwater fishing.
Ideal: Five to seven days. This allows three or four fishing days split across the two main venues, a saltwater day trip from Ao Nang, time to explore the limestone coastline by longtail boat, and a leisurely pace that does justice to the landscape. Krabi is not a city — it rewards a slower rhythm than Bangkok.
Combined trip: Many anglers structure a Thailand trip as Bangkok pay-lakes (3–4 days) followed by a flight to Krabi or Phuket (5–7 days). This covers both the freshwater circuit in its most intense form and the Andaman coast experience in one itinerary.
Getting There
Krabi has its own airport (KBV), served by direct flights from Bangkok (approximately 80 minutes from Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang on Bangkok Airways, AirAsia, or Thai Lion Air). Several direct international flights also operate to Krabi during peak season from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and select Chinese cities.
The alternative gateway is Phuket International Airport (HKT), from which Krabi is approximately a 90-minute drive via the Sarasin Bridge and Highway 4. This is a practical option if you're combining Phuket and Krabi in the same trip — fly into Phuket, spend time there, then drive to Krabi (or take a ferry via Phi Phi if you prefer a scenic route). Ferries also connect Phuket's Rassada Pier directly to Krabi's Klong Jilad Pier, taking approximately 2–2.5 hours.
From Krabi Airport, Ao Nang is about 45 minutes by taxi (700–900 THB). Gillhams Fishing Resort provides transfers from Ao Nang or the airport for guests — confirm when booking.
Where to Stay
Ao Nang: The practical base for most visitors to Krabi. The beach town has the widest range of accommodation — from budget guesthouses to mid-range resorts — alongside good restaurant options, travel agents, and the departure point for longtail boats to the offshore islands. A 10–15 minute drive from Gillhams.
Gillhams itself: For serious anglers, staying at the resort eliminates transport logistics and puts you on the bank at first light without a commute. The lodge accommodation is comfortable — not luxury, but solid — and the package rates often represent good value when fishing sessions are included. The breakfast is excellent.
Krabi Town: The actual provincial capital, located on the estuary of the Krabi River, has a laid-back charm that is entirely different from the beach-resort bustle of Ao Nang. Worth a visit, though less convenient for Gillhams access. Some good budget accommodation and a handful of excellent restaurants.
Railay / Tonsai: The impossibly scenic peninsula accessible only by boat offers dramatic scenery and a completely traffic-free environment. Romantic rather than practical for fishing — the longtail commute to Ao Nang is possible but adds friction to early morning starts.
A Sample 3-Day Krabi Angler Itinerary
Day 1 — Arrival and Gillhams afternoon session Arrive at Krabi Airport and transfer directly to Ao Nang or Gillhams. If you've booked an afternoon session at Gillhams, there's time to check in, gear up, and spend three to four hours on the bank before dusk. The evening light on the karst hills surrounding the lake is extraordinary. Dinner at the resort or at one of the seafood restaurants in Ao Nang.
Day 2 — Full day at Gillhams This is the centrepiece of the trip. Arrive at the lake by first light — the early morning session before 9am is often the most productive. Fish through to late afternoon with a break during the hottest midday hours. Target arapaima on a float-fished approach in the morning, then switch to Giant Siamese carp or snakehead in the afternoon. The resident guides can read the lake conditions and advise on which pegs are fishing well. Return to accommodation tired, satisfied, and probably sunburned.
Day 3 — DreamLake morning, Ao Nang afternoon Spend the morning at DreamLake — a half-day session gives you a feel for its different character without exhausting the venue. By midday, wrap up and head to Ao Nang for lunch. The afternoon is for exploring: a longtail boat trip to the offshore islands, a walk along the beach, or simply sitting at a café watching the limestone towers change colour in the afternoon light. If your flight departs from Krabi in the evening, you have time for all of this.
Conservation and Ethical Notes
The catch-and-release ethic at Gillhams and DreamLake is well-established and strictly observed. The fish in these venues have been caught and released many times — they are the stock, and their welfare is the foundation of the business. Handle them with care, follow the staff's guidance on unhooking and photography, and minimise time out of the water.
The surrounding Krabi environment raises broader questions worth noting. The limestone karst landscape is ecologically sensitive, and the growth of tourism has placed pressure on the coastal and marine environment. When taking saltwater day trips, choose operators who observe responsible fishing and boating practices around the offshore islands.
Wild fish in Krabi's rivers and reservoirs include some genuinely threatened species. If you're exploring wild waterways, consult the catch-and-release rules and consider releasing everything unless you are fishing in an explicitly designated harvest area.
Where to Go Next
Krabi occupies a central position on the Andaman coast, with excellent connections in every direction.
- Phuket — An hour and a half away by road or ferry, Phuket's charter fleet is the natural complement to Krabi's freshwater focus. Combine both for a complete Andaman fishing trip.
- Khao Lak — North of Phuket, the primary departure point for Similan Islands liveaboard fishing. If big-game offshore fishing is on your agenda, this is the extension.
- Bangkok — Return to the pay-lake capital to complete the full spectrum of Thai freshwater fishing. Gillhams and Bungsamran represent the two poles of the pay-lake world; experiencing both in one trip is entirely worthwhile.
