December and January represent Thailand's premier fishing window. The rains have gone, the humidity has dropped to the most comfortable levels of the year, and both freshwater and saltwater fishing are in the best condition they will be for the next twelve months. Combine this with school holidays across much of the world and you have the most popular period for international fishing families visiting the country.
The challenge is planning — this window books out faster than any other, prices are at their peak, and the gap between a well-planned trip and an improvised one is larger than at any other time of year.
The Cool-Season Fishing Window
From late November through early March, Thailand experiences what locals call the "cool season" — though cool is relative. Bangkok averages 27–32°C in December and January, which feels fresh to anyone arriving from northern-hemisphere winter. Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai) genuinely feels cool, with overnight temperatures dropping to 10–15°C in the highlands and comfortable fishing conditions all day.
What the cool season delivers for fishing:
Water temperatures in the optimal range. Bangkok pay-lakes run at 24–27°C in December–January — right at the feeding sweet spot for arapaima, giant Mekong catfish, and barramundi. These species are active throughout the day, not just at dawn and dusk.
Reduced weed and algae growth. Pay-lakes that become congested with floating vegetation during the rainy season clear significantly by December. Casting is easier, lure presentation is cleaner, and snag rates drop.
Excellent marine water clarity. The Andaman Sea is at its clearest and calmest from November through April. Visibility for offshore fishing is exceptional. For families who want a mix of fishing and snorkelling/diving, December is the optimal window.
No rain delays. Unlike the May–October period where a session can be cut short by heavy storms, December–January fishing is essentially rain-free in most regions. Full-day sessions are predictable and comfortable.
Freshwater Family Venues
Bangkok Pay-Lakes — The Practical Choice
For families staying in or near Bangkok, the major pay-lakes are the most practical December–January fishing option. They require no long-distance travel, they are open all day with food facilities, and the species range — including barramundi and peacock bass that respond well to light tackle — is manageable for younger family members.
Bungsamran is the flagship experience: the arapaima and giant catfish are impressive even to watch, and children are often more engaged by seeing a 100kg fish being played than by catching one themselves. Families typically book one or two adult rods while younger members watch, photograph, and take turns at lighter side rods targeting smaller species.
Boon Mar Ponds is a particularly good choice for children aged 8–14 because one pond is specifically stocked with smaller barramundi and peacock bass on lighter tackle. Kids can have a genuine fighting fish experience without adult-level gear. The shorter walk, compact layout, and informal atmosphere work well for families.
IT Lake Monsters offers the air-conditioned café as a major family bonus — parents who are not fishing can sit in comfort while the fishing member of the family is on the peg.
Kids at pay-lakes: practical tips
Bring your own light spinning outfit (a 7ft rod rated 8–15lb with a 2500-size reel is ideal) if you want your child to fish independently. Most venues rent heavy rods designed for giant species — far too powerful for a child to manage. A simple setup with a live prawn or small soft plastic fished under a float produces good results for children at most Bangkok lakes.
Gillham's Fishing Resort — The Premium Family Package
For families where budget allows, Gillham's in Krabi is the gold standard December–January fishing trip. The resort offers:
- Comfortable on-site bungalow accommodation (book ground floor for families with young children)
- An air-conditioned restaurant serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner
- A lake stocked with over 50 species including barramundi, arapaima, and multiple giant carp
- Light-tackle options alongside the heavy gear for children and non-specialist adults
- The broader Krabi area within easy reach: tiger cave temple, Ao Nang beach, kayaking, snorkelling trips
The combination of world-class fishing and a genuine resort experience makes Gillham's the obvious choice for families where not everyone is equally enthusiastic about fishing. The non-fishing partner or children can spend time at the beach while the angler fishes; the evenings work as a genuine holiday.
December is high season at Gillham's. Expect full occupancy most nights and book a minimum of six to eight weeks ahead for the Christmas–New Year period.
Kanchanaburi Area
The rivers and lakes around Kanchanaburi, two to three hours west of Bangkok, offer an excellent family base in December–January. The River Kwai Bridge, the Death Railway, national parks, and wildlife sanctuaries provide non-fishing activities. The fishing itself — snakehead, catfish, and barramundi in the various tributaries — is excellent.
Baan Ing Phu fishing resort in Kanchanaburi is specifically designed for multi-day family visits with a range of accommodation and both fishing and non-fishing activities.
Andaman Coast Offshore: The Christmas/NYE Booking Crisis
Phuket charter fishing during Christmas week operates on a completely different booking dynamic from the rest of the year — if you haven't booked by October, you are competing for cancellations.
The Andaman coast — Phuket, Khao Lak, Krabi, Koh Lanta — is at its finest in December and January. Seas are calm, tuna, GT, wahoo, and sailfish are all accessible, and the experience of offshore fishing in perfect Andaman conditions is hard to replicate anywhere else in Asia at this price point.
The problem is demand. International visitor numbers to Phuket and Khao Lak peak in December–January, and a meaningful proportion of those visitors want to go fishing. The Phuket fishing charter fleet is not enormous, and the best operators book out months in advance.
Key booking windows:
- Christmas week (December 23–January 2): Book by October, ideally September. The most popular operators offer no cancellations during this period.
- January (post-holiday): Still busy but more availability. Book six to eight weeks ahead.
- December 1–22: Good availability with 3–4 weeks lead time for most operators.
For families specifically, shared charters (where you book individual seats rather than the whole boat) are a cost-effective option and are available at shorter notice than private charter bookings. The tradeoff is that your fishing agenda is shared with other guests.
What to look for in a Phuket/Khao Lak family charter:
- Safety equipment including child life jackets in the right sizes
- A covered deck space for non-fishing family members
- Captains with English communication (essential for safety briefings with children)
- A defined catch-and-release or keep-fish policy — families often want to take a fish home; understand the vessel's rules before booking
Gulf Coast: Hua Hin and Pattaya in December–January
For families based inland or not wanting to travel to the Andaman coast, the Gulf of Thailand's western shore (Hua Hin, Pranburi, Chumphon) offers good December fishing conditions. The northeast monsoon's main effect is on the eastern Gulf (Koh Samui area), leaving the western shore generally calm.
Hua Hin: Pier fishing in Hua Hin town for small jacks and snappers is a perfectly accessible family fishing activity — no booking required, minimal gear needed, and the pier is adjacent to the main beach and town amenities. For more serious offshore fishing, Hua Hin charter operators offer half-day and full-day trips targeting GT, barracuda, and queenfish on the offshore banks.
Pattaya: The Pattaya charter fleet is large and experienced, and December–January sees good fishing conditions in the outer Gulf. The city's extensive non-fishing entertainment options mean Pattaya works for families where only one or two members are fishing.
School Holiday Timing
International school holidays during the December–January window vary by country, but the common peak is approximately December 20 through January 6–10. Thai schools also observe a break over this period, creating peak domestic and international tourism simultaneously.
Booking strategy: identify your school's exact holiday dates, add two to three days buffer at each end, and book all fishing activities (charters, pay-lake sessions) and accommodation before those dates are widely known — typically September–October for the December window.
Budget and Pricing Reality
December–January pricing in Thailand's fishing destinations:
- Pay-lake day tickets: Same year-round pricing at most venues; no seasonal premium
- Phuket offshore charters: 20–40% higher than low-season rates for the Christmas–New Year period
- Andaman coast accommodation: 50–100% higher than low-season rates in peak weeks
- Gillham's resort: Steady premium pricing year-round but no explicit Songkran/Christmas surcharge — book ahead for availability rather than to avoid price spikes
The bottom line: December–January in Thailand is worth every baht if you plan ahead. The combination of optimal weather, peak fish activity, school holidays, and the country's extraordinary range of fishing options makes it the most compelling window in the Thai fishing calendar for families specifically.
