February sits in an interesting position on the Bangkok fishing calendar — it is technically the last full month of the cool season, and while the finest conditions of the year belong to January, February has enough of the same quality to be a genuinely rewarding time to fish. There is also a subtlety to February that January lacks: the dawning awareness that these comfortable conditions will not last much longer, that the heat is gathering somewhere to the north, and that the window for easy, all-day fishing is beginning to close.
Weather and Water Conditions
February 2026 opened very much as January had left off. The cool, dry air that settled over Bangkok through the peak of the cool season was still firmly established in the first week, with pre-dawn temperatures at the lakeside venues staying comfortably in the low-to-mid 20s Celsius and daytime highs remaining below 32°C for most of the month.
From around the third week, however, a gradual but unmistakable shift began. Daytime temperatures pushed more persistently toward 33–34°C on the clearer afternoons, the breeze that had been a reliable companion through January became lighter and less frequent, and the distinct quality of the morning air — that cool, slightly damp clarity that makes the pre-dawn start worth getting up for — began to feel a little warmer, a little closer, just a little less comfortable than it had been.
Water temperatures followed the pattern, rising incrementally from the January low of around 24–25°C toward 27–28°C by month's end. Fish feeding behaviour shifted in response, with the midday window becoming progressively less reliable and the dawn and late-afternoon sessions increasingly important for consistent results.
Freshwater Pay-Lake Roundup
Bungsamran Lake
Bungsamran delivered what the February regulars have come to expect: excellent early-month fishing with a gradual, noticeable shift in pattern as the month progressed. The first two weeks produced sessions comparable to January's output, with giant Mekong catfish feeding confidently across most of the day and the dawn platforms reporting multiple-fish sessions as standard.
By the third week, experienced hands were noting the change. Not a dramatic drop in productivity — Bungsamran is too well-stocked for that — but a tightening of the feeding windows and a slight reduction in the number of takes during the middle of the day. Anglers who adapted by arriving earlier and staying patient through the noon hours found the session total remained solid. Those arriving at mid-morning expecting January-standard all-day action found the lake a little quieter than they anticipated.
Giant Siamese carp on the margin platforms continued to perform well through most of February, with the still-clear water allowing the floating bait approaches that work so effectively in cool-season conditions.
"The first few days of February feel like a gift — you get almost everything January had, without the holiday crowds. By the end of the month you're already thinking about getting up earlier and setting the alarm for the good part of the session."
IT Lake Monsters
IT Lake Monsters remained productive throughout February, with arapaima continuing to feature in reports from the regular morning sessions. The specimen-angling community in Bangkok largely agrees that February is the last month in which you can reliably expect full-day arapaima activity — from March onward, the dawn and early morning window becomes critical, and midday encounters become far less common.
Giant Siamese carp fishing at the venue was excellent through mid-month, with some of the largest fish in the lake making appearances during the longer, cooler morning sessions. The lake's resident Chao Phraya catfish were also active, providing an alternative target for anglers who had satisfied their arapaima ambitions and wanted to explore the rest of what the venue has to offer.
Pilot 111 and Bang Na
Pilot 111 remained reliable for barramundi on lures through February's first two weeks before the fishing tightened a little in line with the general pattern across the Bangkok region. Bang Na Lakes offered solid mid-range sessions for catfish and smaller carp, with walk-in access making it popular for anglers wanting a quick morning session without the commitment of a full-day booking.
Boon Mar
Boon Mar continued to serve its core audience of local regulars and visiting anglers seeking a relaxed, low-pressure environment. The species mix and reliably good facilities made it a consistent choice for those spending multiple days in Bangkok who wanted variety in their venue selection.
Preparing for the Shift: Tactical Adjustments
From mid-February onward, shift your session start time progressively earlier. The dawn window is becoming the defining period of the fishing day, and arriving at the lake gate before opening time is increasingly the difference between an excellent session and a mediocre one.
The transition from cool season to pre-hot season is the time to begin adjusting tactics. The most impactful change is timing: the productive window is contracting at both ends, and dawn starts become progressively more important. Bait approaches do not need major revision — paste, pellet and dough remain effective — but the presentations that worked during the middle of the January day will begin to underperform if deployed at the same time in late February.
Lure fishing, which reached its Bangkok peak in December and January, starts to become more demanding from mid-February onward as water temperatures edge upward and fish become less willing to chase. Surface presentations in the pre-dawn and early morning remain viable, but the extended lure fishing windows of the peak cool season are closing down.
Looking Ahead: March 2026
March will bring a clear and progressive shift toward the pre-hot-season conditions that characterise Bangkok's late-summer fishing. The dawn sessions will remain excellent, potentially the best of the day by an increasing margin, and species like giant Mekong catfish will continue to feed well in the cooler morning hours. The challenge for March will be maximising the early window and managing expectations for the hotter parts of the day.
Recommendations for Visiting Anglers
February remains an excellent choice for a Bangkok fishing trip, particularly in the first three weeks. The combination of high-quality conditions, lower visitor numbers than the December–January peak and the full array of species in good form makes it a strong value proposition. Book your preferred venues in advance for weekends, arrive early and enjoy what is — even in its final weeks — still one of the most comfortable and productive periods on the entire Bangkok fishing calendar.
