The Specimen Lake Route — Bangkok Exotics to Krabi's Crown Jewel
There is a subset of Thailand angling travellers for whom the goal is not variety but scale: the largest freshwater fish possible, in the best possible setting, with attentive guiding and a comfortable base. This six-day itinerary is built for them.
Bangkok's pay-lakes open the trip with reliable big-fish action and a chance to shake off jet lag in calm surroundings. Then Gillham's Fishing Resort in Krabi takes over for the final three fishing days — two full days on a lake that combines an extraordinary species list with some of the most striking scenery in southern Thailand.
It is a genuinely different proposition from the Bangkok-Phuket saltwater itinerary. No offshore boats, no motion sickness risk, no dawn departures on an Andaman swell. Instead: specimen freshwater fishing at a world-class resort, great food, comfortable beds, and limestone towers rising out of the jungle at the edge of the lake. For anglers (and their non-fishing partners), few Thailand itineraries balance fishing quality with overall travel experience as effectively as this one.
Why Gillham's Earns Three Full Days
Most first-time visitors to Gillham's wish they had booked more time. The lake is large enough and the species mix varied enough that the second full day of fishing typically outperforms the first — you've had 24 hours of guidance, you know which swims hold fish, and you've started to read the lake.
Two full fishing days at Gillham's (Days 4 and 5) plus the evening arrival reconnaissance on Day 3 gives you something close to three days of intelligence while keeping the total trip to six nights. It's the minimum to do the venue justice while leaving a meaningful Bangkok freshwater portion at the start.
Landing a 60kg arapaima with a limestone karst tower reflected in the lake behind you is the photograph you'll be explaining to non-fishing friends for years.
Bangkok Pay-Lake Selection
This itinerary opens with Bungsamran Lake for the Day 1 afternoon warm-up and IT Lake Monsters for the Day 2 full session, but the combination is flexible:
Bungsamran Lake is the most famous Thai pay-lake — enormous Mekong giant catfish (to over 200kg), arapaima, and Siamese carp. Well-established venue with a range of fishing areas from day-ticket sections to private swims.
IT Lake Monsters specialises in large arapaima. If arapaima is your primary Bangkok target, both days could be spent here without repetition.
Palm Tree Lagoon offers a more resort-style atmosphere if Day 2 falls on a day when you want lower intensity and comfortable surroundings.
Pilot 111 is a consistently productive venue for giant snakehead and Mekong catfish, suitable if you want to add snakehead to the species list.
See full venue profiles at Bungsamran Lake, IT Lake Monsters, Palm Tree Lagoon, and Pilot 111.
Krabi Province on Your Non-Fishing Time
Non-fishing partners travelling to Krabi have genuine world-class options:
Railay Beach — accessible only by longtail boat, surrounded by vertical limestone cliffs, routinely listed among Asia's best beaches. Half-day return from Ao Nang.
Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Sua) — 1,237 steps to a summit with panoramic views across Krabi Province. A significant physical undertaking but one of southern Thailand's great viewpoints.
Ao Nang — the main tourist hub near Gillham's, with restaurants, massage shops, and a lively evening market scene within easy taxi distance of the resort.
Koh Hong and Phang Nga Bay island tours — full-day longtail boat excursions through emerald-green islands that rival Phang Nga Bay for scenic drama.
Gillham's Fishing Resort is not located in Krabi Town itself — it's approximately 45 minutes out, closer to the limestone countryside. Confirm exact pickup logistics with the resort when booking; they can usually arrange airport transfers and day-trip transport for non-fishing guests.
Weather Flex
Both Bangkok and Gillham's fish reliably year-round, which is the practical advantage of this all-freshwater-focused itinerary structure. There is no offshore weather dependency — if it rains, you fish under an umbrella or in a covered swim. The lakes fish through the monsoon season without issue.
If you visit during the southwest monsoon (May–October), Krabi province will experience more rain and the surrounding scenery will be lush and dramatic. Gillham's is open and fishing throughout this period. The one consideration: some of the Krabi sightseeing options (particularly boat trips) are limited during heavy weather windows.
For anglers who visit in the wet season and want a dry-season comparison, the monsoon season fishing strategy guide covers how to adapt Bangkok sessions when temperatures and weather patterns shift.
Total Budget Range
| Category | Low Estimate | High Estimate | |---|---|---| | Flights (international + Bangkok-Krabi domestic) | USD $400 | USD $900 | | Bangkok accommodation (2 nights) | USD $80 | USD $250 | | Pay-lake session fees (2 sessions) | USD $100 | USD $300 | | Bangkok guide fee (Day 2) | USD $80 | USD $150 | | Gillham's lodge + fishing (3 nights, all-in) | USD $600 | USD $1,200 | | Food, transport, incidentals | USD $150 | USD $350 | | Total per person | ~USD $1,410 | ~USD $3,150 |
Gillham's all-inclusive lodge packages represent good value relative to booking accommodation and fishing separately. Confirm current rates directly with the resort as prices are updated periodically.
Packing Notes
This is the most luggage-friendly itinerary in the ThaiAngler catalogue. Gillham's supplies all tackle and bait. Bangkok pay-lakes provide gear for day visitors. You can, in theory, complete the entire six days with carry-on luggage only.
What to pack regardless:
- SPF 50+ sunscreen and a wide-brim hat (both environments are hot and sun-exposed)
- Long-sleeved moisture-wicking fishing shirt x2 (bank fishing under Thai sun is serious heat exposure)
- Lightweight rain jacket or poncho (afternoon thunderstorms are common both in Bangkok and Krabi)
- Comfortable sandals or lightweight shoes for the resort
- Camera or phone mount for fish photography — Gillham's staff assist with photos but a selfie stick or bank stick-mounted holder is useful for solo shots

Who This Trip Is For
- Anglers whose primary goal is landing big exotic freshwater species rather than saltwater
- Couples where the non-fishing partner wants genuine tourism options (Krabi delivers)
- Anglers who want high-quality attentive guiding and resort comfort alongside serious fishing
- First-time Thailand visitors who want a taste of Bangkok city alongside fishing without the offshore complexity of a Phuket add-on
- Anglers who have done a Bangkok-only pay-lake trip before and want to add Gillham's as a natural next step
It is not the right itinerary for anglers specifically chasing sailfish, GT, or offshore blue-water species — for that, the 5-day Phuket Fishing Itinerary or 7-day Andaman Fishing Itinerary are the better choices.
