The Premium Lake Question
When you have decided that Bungsamran's high-volume urban fishing is not what you are after — when you want a lake that takes specimen fishing seriously, offers genuine resort facilities, and holds fish that belong in trophy photographs rather than Instagram brag posts — the next question splits into two options. Gillham's Fishing Resort in Krabi is the established name, the venue international anglers have been writing about for two decades. Jurassic Mountain, set against the limestone hills of Phetchaburi province near Cha-Am, is the newer challenger that has been quietly building a serious reputation on its own terms.
This is not a David-versus-Goliath comparison. Both venues are premium operations with knowledgeable staff, quality tackle, and genuine specimen fish. The differences are subtler than the Bungsamran-versus-Gillham's question, which is precisely why this comparison requires more care.
Gillham's: The Established Standard
Gillham's has been operating long enough that the fish in the lake have grown with the venue. Some of the arapaima in residence have been there for over a decade and have reached sizes that few managed freshwater fisheries anywhere in the world can match.
Steve Gillham's resort in Krabi did not invent the Thai specimen lake concept, but it refined it to a level that made it the benchmark everything else is measured against. The lake's arapaima population is the main draw — fish consistently exceeding 60 kg are caught on camera, and specimens pushing 100 kg and beyond have been landed by guests. Beyond arapaima, the Mekong giant catfish and Siamese carp stocks are similarly impressive in scale.
The resort infrastructure reinforces the premium positioning. Chalets are comfortable if not luxurious, the restaurant handles both Thai and Western food competently, and the bar exists to facilitate the kind of end-of-day conversation that only happens among anglers who have had a proper session. The guides are the key asset — UK-trained and capable of discussing rig mechanics, bait presentation theory, and species behaviour with genuine expertise.
The location demands commitment. Getting to Krabi means flying from Bangkok, adding both cost and travel time to any trip. For international anglers arriving at Krabi or Phuket airport, Gillham's is a natural anchor point. For anglers based in Bangkok, the logistics require planning. Jurassic Mountain: The Scenic Challenger
Jurassic Mountain earns its name from the limestone karst formations that rise behind the lake — geology that creates one of the most visually striking fishing settings in Southeast Asia. The venue sits in the hills above Cha-Am, a couple of hours' drive south of Bangkok, which gives it a significant geographical advantage over Gillham's for anglers who are not flying into the south.
Jurassic Mountain is not trying to be Gillham's with better scenery. It has its own species mix and its own identity, and the most interesting difference is the alligator gar.
Alligator gar is a genuinely unusual species in the pay-lake circuit — long-bodied, prehistoric-looking predators from North America that take lures and bait presentations with heart-stopping aggression. Gillham's does not stock them. If landing an alligator gar is on your target list, Jurassic Mountain is where you go. The arapaima population is solid, the Mekong catfish are present at impressive weights, and the overall species mix is diverse enough to sustain a two-day visit without repetition.
The English-language support is good rather than exceptional. The bilingual guides are experienced and helpful, but the seamless communication of an entirely UK-managed operation is not quite replicated. For anglers comfortable with basic Thai fishing context or who have fished Thailand before, this is not a meaningful handicap.
Scenery and the Intangible Factors
It would be dishonest to ignore the scenery question, because it affects everything from how a fishing day feels to whether your photographs are worth sharing. Jurassic Mountain's limestone backdrop is dramatic and distinctive — the kind of setting that appears on travel-magazine covers. Gillham's jungle-edge lake is beautiful in a lush, tropical way, but it does not have the same visual punctuation.
This matters differently for different anglers. If you are fishing with a partner who will want photographs, if you are creating content, or if you simply want the experience of fishing somewhere that looks unlike anywhere else in the world, Jurassic Mountain's setting is a genuine advantage. If you are there to catch the biggest possible arapaima and everything else is secondary, the scenery of the backdrop is irrelevant.
The Access Question
This is, in practice, often the deciding factor. Jurassic Mountain is reachable from Bangkok by road in two to three hours — manageable as a day trip from the capital, comfortable as a two-night stay. Gillham's requires a flight to Krabi, a transfer, and a commitment of at least two full days to justify the travel. For anglers routing through southern Thailand, Gillham's is the natural stop. For anglers based in Bangkok, Jurassic Mountain removes a significant logistical hurdle.
If your Thailand itinerary includes Hua Hin, Cha-Am, or the Phetchaburi region for other reasons, Jurassic Mountain integrates naturally. If you are making a dedicated fishing trip to the south, Gillham's pairs well with island time in Krabi or Koh Lanta.
Who Should Choose Each Venue
Choose Gillham's if: arapaima is your primary target and you want the highest confidence of a large specimen, you want an English-first resort experience with full infrastructure, you are routing through southern Thailand already, or you want to say you fished the venue that set the standard for premium freshwater fishing in Thailand.
Choose Jurassic Mountain if: you are based in Bangkok and want to avoid internal flights, alligator gar is on your target list, the limestone scenery is important to you, or you want a premium experience at a slightly lower total cost. It also suits anglers who want to explore a venue that has not yet been written about quite as exhaustively — there is something to be said for the relative freshness of a place still building its reputation.
The Verdict
Gillham's retains the edge for most international specimen anglers — its arapaima are bigger on average, its infrastructure is more refined, and its two-decade track record creates a certainty that newer operations cannot yet match. But the margin is narrower than the venue's fame suggests.
Jurassic Mountain is not a consolation prize. It is a serious specimen lake with a compelling species mix, a stunning setting, and a geographical advantage that will make it the correct choice for a significant proportion of anglers. The alligator gar alone is enough to justify the visit for dedicated species hunters.
Fish both over time. Start with whichever is more logistically convenient on your current trip and save the other for next time. Thailand's premium lake circuit rewards return visits.
